Neck pain is a prevalent and debilitating condition affecting a significant portion of the global population. Its causes are multifaceted, encompassing both intrinsic factors like muscle strain and degenerative changes, and extrinsic factors such as poor posture and trauma. Given the complexity of neck pain, treatment often requires a multidisciplinary approach involving medical intervention, physical therapy, and lifestyle adjustments. Kinesio taping, a non-invasive technique involving the application of elastic tape to the skin, is a promising non-pharmacological intervention with the potential to alleviate neck pain.
The meta-analysis and systematic review analysed the results from 10 studies with a total of 620 patients receiving treatment for neck pain. The benefits of a taping intervention notably surpassed conventional and sham interventions. The best results were seen for non-specific neck pain and mechanical neck pain with results being more favorable at 4 weeks rather than 1 week or less.
What can we learn from this study?
Kinesiology taping was shown to be effective at reducing neck pain and improving patients quality of life in a cost-effective and accessible way.
The tapes were applied in a variety of different ways for a range of neck pain presentations including whiplash and non-specific neck pain.
